If there's a big-time multiple murderer from about 1950 until now who hasn't been interviewed by Robert Ressler, he probably refused the honor. Indispensable reading for serial killer mavens, and better written than John Douglas and Mark Olshaker's Mindhunter, this book is packed with fascinating details from dozens of cases: The killer John Joubert, for example, started his life of cruelty as a kid one day when he was riding his bike with a sharpened pencil in his hand. He rode up next to a little girl who was walking, and stabbed her in the back with the pencil. Ouch!

Unglaublich interessant auch wenn er sich teilweise selbst beweihräuchert.Kam pünktlich an und hatte als kleine Aufmerksamkeit ein schönes Lesezeichen anbei.
If you can get endure the braggadocio and the thinly veiled invective that Ressler levels and some of his colleagues in the FBI's famed Behavioral Sciences Unit, this book deserves a place on the shelf with "Mindhunter" and "Journey Into Darkness." Of special note are the pages dedicated to the evolution of criminal profiling using infamous murder cases from the 40's, 50's and 60's. The serious student of crime will also appreciate the attention given to such things as what distinguishes a "disorganized" from an "organized" serial killer. It would have been better, however, if Ressler had left out some of the pictures in the photo section. Showing some of the victims of Harvey Glatman, Jerome Brudos and Ted Bundy was in bad taste, even if those photos have been printed in other true crime studies. Next time, Mr. Ressler, leave the ego, the invective and the victim photos out . . . the result will be a better book.
This is the only book that a student of serial killers will ever need-the others are only case studies.Ressler gives the basic tools and terminology used to classify serial murderers and real life examples of the categories given.This book is a nice mix of an overview of the subject and an explanation of the science used to catch the killers.I found myself analyzing other killers using the same method Ressler teaches.Sadly,it is now hard for me to read books about serial murderers as I usually have them categorized within a chapter or two.This book avoids the sensationalism inherent to the subject,and is by far the best one of its kind that I have found.
After having read Mindhunter my interest was whetted on the topic of serial murder and what compels one to commit acts that are so heinous. Whoever Fights Monsters was a severe letdown. It didn't even scratch the surface of what was hoping to get out of reading it. This book was reminiscent of a two bit detective novel that was hastily put together. The substance of the book meanders from crime to crime. Very broad, but absolutely no depth. Very few specifics pertaining to the perpetrators themselves are discussed. Rather, Ressler seems content to mention a few specifics about the crimes just enough to quantify how revolting the acts committed by these monsters are. To sum up, I expected far more from this book than what was delivered. Ressler should have spent more time honing his writing skills while at Michigan State University. This book wouldn't be worthy of a 2.0!
So, the author is an egotist. So what. He has a lot to be egotistical about. I don't know if he coined the term "serial killer" or if started VICAP and CPRP all on his own - but who cares? Read beyond Robert Ressler and you'll find a great book about the evils of humanity and what makes them tick. Besides the ego in the book, I found only one other problem: Ressler mentions and re-mentions names of serial killers throughout the book as if we are as knowledgeable with them as he is. I found myself flipping to the index a whole lot to find out who he was talking about, though he had previously mentioned them. All in all, a great read and a great book!
There is no doubt that Mr. Ressler is among the foremost experts in his particular field. A great deal of knowledge can be gleaned from this work. The text flows. My interest was kept throughout the whole book. Mr. Ressler rivals John Douglas in his practical knowledge of serial killers and what motivates their deeds. If you have any doubts about the author's credentials when you start the book rest assured he will cite his resume again and again. I enjoyed the book and would read others by Mr. Ressler. A man of his considerable expertise should not feel the need to gloat as he does throughout the book. This was, nonetheless, a very enjoyable read.
This was one of the few books I couldn't even finish reading. All Mr Ressler does throughout his book is pat himself on the back. Everything that helped to solve a crime was 100% his idea, and everything that went wrong he gladly names the guilty party. He even adds irrelevant facts which have nothing to do with the storyline just to brag about something he wants credit for. This book is just one big ego trip for him.
This is an excellent book for those interested in the science surrounding who serial killers are and why they do the things they do. It also provides a strong foundation to help one understand the unique task of profiling these individuals. Ressler's seminars on this subject coincide with the material in this book and assure the reader they have learned from the most experienced as to the workings of the criminal mind!
